New Blog Category

A new category has been added to the Barrow-in-Furness dot info website titled local bloggers, the category features a selection of blogs from residents in the area. Webmasters in the area are invited to submit their blogs to be listed on the page for free. A link back would be nice however it is not mandatory. At the moment there is 3 blogs to read. This has increased the overall pages on the directory. An article about blogging asking the question is blogging for you? The front page of the directory now has news from the barrow browser on, the news feed is an RSS feed.

Updates soon…maybe

I havnt done any work on the forum for a while so im going to have to update it sooner or later. Right now im thinking about waiting until after the next google update. Hopefully that shouldnt be to far away.

Yes, well updates to the forum will happen eventually. The script is updated weekly with new bans for those pesky people who post adverts.

One thing the forum is missing is a calandar for events and stuff like that, i actually have one on the forum but its not public yet and i havnt placed any links to it. Eventually i want to integrate it in to the main forum so people can add dates to things when they post but this involves a lot of php and im just not in the mood at the moment. Apart from that i have a ton of work to do on other sites so its just finding the time. Summer is on its way so that means even less work will get done.

Cleaning Your Computer

Cleaning Your Computer
By Alistair Barrow

If your computer is used a lot and keep it on for hours at a time it’s a good idea to clean it every now and again, one of the main problems is dust. Cleaning out this dust can extend your computers life and make keep it running faster and quieter.

If you have a desktop computer then the main place dust accumulates is around the CPU unit and fan areas. To prevent your processor from over heating there is a fan connected to a heat sink which sits on top of the processor to disperse the heat. This fan blows air down on to the heat sink to cool it down as the heat is passed up from the CPU. Because the fan is constantly blowing air it also blows the dust particles in the air in to the heat sink, over time this can clog up the computers heat sink reducing its effectiveness. Because of the dust your fan may have to blow faster making it louder and more costly to run. Normally you can see if the fan is clogged up simply by opening your computer up and looking at it. If your fans heat sink is really clogged up with dust and dirty looking it is a good idea to give it a clean. When dealing with the inside of your computer or anything electrical ensure the power is turned off and it is unplugged first.

The best way to clean out the insides of your computer is by using a can of compressed air and special nozzle, you can buy these from any good computer store. The spray nozzle is useful for getting in to those tricky places. When spraying the compressed air on to your computer, make sure you don’t spray it for to long as condensation may form some drops of water. After blowing away any dust from your computers heat sinks give it a gentle wipe over with an anti-static cloth. You can also use the compressed air to blow out the dust from the keyboard and power unit.

Cleaning the inside of your computer doesn’t take long providing you have the correct equipment, and once done you notice an immediate improvement in your computers performance. The fan wont need to blow as hard so it will be quieter and thanks to the processor running at a cooler temperature your whole computer should generally run that extra bit faster. I try to clean my computer every 4 or 5 months or so to keep it running efficiently.

Some Basic Web Design Tips

Don’t bother with splash pages.
A splash page is normally a pointless page people put on their websites as an introduction. The page normally contains some sort of image on with a big click here to enter sign, or sometimes people don’t say anything and just hope you will click on the picture to enter their site. Splash pages are fairly pointless and it is just creating more work for your visitor as they have to click the mouse button an extra time just to see the content of your site. By removing the splash page the visitor can get to see the best parts of your site straight away, without having to wait for a pointless page to load.

Keep your navigation simple.
To put it simply if your navigation is too complicated and people don’t understand how to get around your site this is a huge web design fault. If a visitor doesn’t know how to navigate around your site they will get frustrated and end up leaving. Keep your navigation simple and try to avoid using scripts or complicated flash based menus, not all browsers support scripts, so some of your visitors might be missing out on important.

Keep your paragraphs reasonable readable lengths.
Although having lots of relative and informative content on your website is good, it is a bad idea to have the blocks of text to big. Not everyone likes reading and to much can deter a visitor. If you keep your paragraphs in reasonable lengths it is much easier for a visitor to read and absorb.

Style it with CSS.
Make sure your text is readable by using a standard font which is compatible with other systems. While some fonts may look good on your computer other people might not have that font installed. It is good web design practice to use CSS when building you site. CSS or Cascading Style Sheets are a perfect way to set and adjust your websites font and size settings. The great thing about using CSS is that you can change the look of your whole site simply by editing the one file.

Test how your site looks in other web browsers
When you are building your site and still in the web design stage it is important to check how it looks on other browsers, just because it looks fine in internet explorer doesn’t mean it looks good on Firefox or Opera. A lot of people use alternative browsers and if your site looks a complete mess then there is a good chance you will loose that visitor for ever. You can check your websites web design to ensure it complies with the web standards at the w3.org website. Validating the page will help to ensure it works properly on other browsers.

Hotels in Barrow

Hotels in Barrow
By Alistair Barrow

Situated on the coast line of North West England is a large town called Barrow in Furness, the town looks over the bay towards England’s famous holiday area Blackpool on one side and has the historical isle of Walney on the other. The town is only a short drive away from one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, the Lake District national park and because of this the town can often provide a useful base for tourists and travelers.

There are plenty of hotels in Barrow to choose from, the town also has a lot of guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodations each with their own individual characteristics, from the friendly relaxed atmosphere of Roosecote farm houses who serve massive breakfasts in the morning to the ultra modern Travelodge hotel facilities in the middle of the town. Some of the guesthouses are converted Victorian buildings, however they have still kept the classic style of the age and look extraordinary.

If you are looking for a guest house or hotel in Barrow then you will find that many of them are located on Abbey Road, this is the towns main road which can make it much easier to get out and explore the Furness area. One such famous area to explore in Barrow is the 700 year old ruins of a Cistercian monk’s abbey known as Furness Abbey, at one time the Abbey was the UK’s second grandest Abbey and it is a very popular attraction. Keeping on the same theme near this famous abbey you can find the Abbey hotel with its large gardens. Sitting in 14 acres of its own private woodland the hotel has many facilities and can be booked for virtually any occasion such as weddings or parties. On the other side of the town is Walney island a great place for kite surfing, the island also has some great bed and breakfast places to stay at. No matter where you decide to stay in the area you can be sure that the service will be good and the stay will be pleasant, most of the family run guesthouses have been in business for a long time so they know how to make people feel welcome.

Thankfully now many of the hotels in Barrow in Furness now have their own websites so you can have a good look around and pick on you like the most. This also makes booking your place to stay much easier and whole break away from home run much more smoothly.

Furness forums

I was reading the furness forums today and there was quite a few good points brought up. One of which was about those movie and video download sites, everyone likes to watch them but the site everyone had been going to got took offline for some reason so we are trying to find some more. There is also a bit of a heated arguement going on between some people and a “chav” which is quite funny, i can sort of see his point but dont entirely understand what they are going on about, seems like a lot of fuss over nothing as far as i can see.

Hotel barrow in furness

Today i was looking for a hotel barrow in furness and i spent about an hour searching around on all the different search sites. I was trying to find some more sites from my town. Not business listings but hotels with actual websites for the directory. I eventually found a few with websites.

Many of the hotels in Barrow have not been listed because they dont have a websites, so i did what i could and found a total of 9 of them. Most of the hotels are in Barrow but a few are on Walney and even one on Roa Island. Now i have the hotels and accomodation category looking quite good i will move on to a different category and seeing how many sites i can get in to that.
